Fishing Spots in Nevada

Swap the sagebrush for alpine lakes, trade the Joshua trees for rugged peaks… then throw fishing into the mix. Yep, you read right. Nevada contains plenty of the high and low desert you’ve seen in the movies, but also a wildly diverse abundance of fresh water, promising some of the best fishing in the West.

Ever considered fly fishing Nevada? You should; our creeks and streams remain pristine. Line fishing, too? In mountain lakes and valley reservoirs all over the state. Grab your live bait, tie a new dry fly, and head out to unbeatable angling in one of Nevada’s many bodies of legendary water.

The Best Places to go Fishing in the Silver State

Wrap your mind—and line—around all different types of fishing for a wide range of species in all corners of the Silver State. Trawl for trophy bass on world-famous Lake Mead and the secluded, labyrinthine Ruby Marshes. Cast for crappie and bluegill on reservoirs all around Nevada. And if it’s trout you’re after, welcome to paradise. In fact, you can catch all seven fish on the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Trout Royal Slam here—something that’s damn near impossible most anywhere else.

Up north, cast flies off ladders in Pyramid Lake, where the world record for a Lahontan cutthroat trout exceeds 40 pounds and reeling in 20-pounders is normal. Chase rainbows and wild browns in the Truckee River and the fabled (and newly public) Walker River, or go for mackinaw (lake trout) and kokanee salmon in crystal-clear Lake Tahoe. Chase tigers in Lamoille Canyon and plan to net more redbands than you can shake a Tenkara rod at—and maybe even the elusive bull trout—in Jarbidge.

Caught and Released over a dozen of these today. Every fish was between 18 and 24 inches. Fishing below the dam at Wild Horse Reservoir. Two small water crossings and a rock covered road is all it took to get to the spot.
