History of Minden, NV

We all have the Dangberg family to thank for bringing the city of Minden into existence. Back in 1857, before Minden was Minden, Heinrich Friedrich (H.F.) Dangberg established Dangberg Ranch, which eventually grew to tens of thousands of acres and led to the creation of the Dangberg Land and Livestock Company. It was on this land that H.F. Dangberg, Jr. founded Minden, NV in 1905, named after a German town near the birthplace of his father. The vision was to build a European-styled planned community around the town square of Minden Park, and – key to the community’s future – land was donated to the V&T Railroad so that the rail line could be extended to Carson Valley, with the route ending smack dab in Minden. This course of action helped turn the entirety of the Carson Valley into an agricultural hub, and these roots are still alive and thriving today.

Get the full, fascinating story straight from the source when you step foot into the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. The postcard-perfect acreage features a still-standing stone cellar from 1867 and numerous original buildings. Inside, guided tours showcase the personal wardrobe of the Dangbergs, the oldest pair of Levi’s in the state of Nevada, stories of how Minden’s founding family is connected to the inventor of the Ferris wheel, and endless amounts of unbelievable artifacts.

Travel Nevada Pro Tip

It’s hard to pick a favorite artifact at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park, but, before you go, challenge everyone in your crew to try. Our suggestion? Keep your eyes peeled for the vintage pair Levi’s and the display on Katrina’s pet skunks.
